Matt Flaharty, Carson Tinney, Braydon Kersey and Tate Mckee Earn National Recognition From College Baseball Foundation  

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Matt Flaharty (Utah), Carson Tinney (Texas), Braydon Kersey (Mercer) and Tate McKee (Georgia Tech) earned weekly honors from the College Baseball Foundation (CBF) for their respective performances last week, it was announced on Tuesday.

Flaharty earned the Brooks Wallace Award Player of the Week while Tinney was named the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Week. Kersey earned the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Week. McKee was selected as the National Pitcher of the Week. 

Brooks Wallace Award Player of the Week (Nation’s Most Outstanding Shortstop)

Matt Flaharty, SS, Redshirt Senior, Utah, Rancho Santa Margarita, California

Matt Flaharty turned in an impressive performance for Utah while extending his season-long hitting streak to 10 games. At the plate, he went 9-for-16 (.625) with four doubles, two home runs, seven runs scored, and 11 RBI. He had a double and multiple RBI in all four games last week, including a season-high four RBI vs. Utah Tech. He also turned one double play among his 17 chances in the field.

Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Week‍‍

Carson Tinney, C, Junior, Texas, Castle Pines, Colorado

Carson Tinney delivered an explosive three-game stretch, dominating at the plate while anchoring the defense behind it. Tinney hit a blistering .538 (7-for-13) with a staggering 1.308 slugging percentage and .625 on-base percentage. He crushed three home runs and collected 10 RBI, while scoring five runs and drawing three walks. He was flawless behind the plate and threw out 33% of the base stealers for the week.

John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Week Award

Braydon Kersey, INF/RHP, Sophomore, Mercer, Alpharetta, Georgia

Braydon Kersey put together an outstanding all-around week as Mercer went 4–0, highlighted by a series sweep over East Tennessee State and a midweek victory against No. 3 Georgia Tech. Kersey went 8-for-15 (.533) with a home run, two doubles, six RBI, four walks, and five runs scored. Against Georgia Tech he was 2-for-3 with his 21st home run of the season. In the ETSU series, he batted 6-for-12 with two doubles, four RBI, and two walks, while earning a save in 1.2 innings with two strikeouts.

National Pitcher of the Week

Tate McKee, RHP, Junior, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw, Georgia

Tate McKee delivered the best starting performance of his career, pitching 7.0 scoreless innings with only one hit allowed and a career-high 14 strikeouts as No. 3 Georgia Tech collected a resounding 9-0 victory over No. 23 Boston College. It’s the most strikeouts by a Tech pitcher against an ACC opponent since 2018. Over his last two starts, McKee has struck out 20 while walking just one. He also matched his career high with eight victories this season.

Brooks Wallace Award

The Brooks Wallace Award is presented annually to honor the nation's most outstanding shortstop. It is a tribute to Brooks Wallace, a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977-80 who passed away at age 27 after a courageous battle with leukemia. Prior to 2009, the award recognized the national player of the year.

Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award

Established in 2000, by the Wichita Sports Commission, the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award is presented annually to honor the nation's most outstanding catcher. Posey began his collegiate career as a shortstop, before moving to catcher where he won the 2008 Johnny Bench Award, Dick Howser Trophy and the Golden Spikes Award. In his MLB career with the San Francisco Giants, Posey earned three world series titles, seven All-Star Game selections, five Silver Slugger Awards, the 2010 National League Rookie of the Year, 2012 National League MVP and was a 2016 Gold Glove Award winner.  

John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award

The John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award is presented annually by the College Baseball Foundation to honor the nation's top combo pitcher-position player. Olerud, who was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007, was a standout pitcher and first baseman at Washington State University from 1987 through 1989. The Olerud Award partners with 64 Analytics to assist with the identification of players for the weekly award as well as watch lists.

National Pitcher of the Year Award

The Pitcher of the Year award, college baseball's version of the Cy Young Award which was created in 2009, is given annually to the nation's top collegiate pitcher.
