Jake Schaffner, Cider Canon, Josiah Overbeek and Andrew Herrmann Earn National Recognition From College Baseball Foundation
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Jake Schaffner (North Carolina), Cider Canon (Duke), Josiah Overbeek (Army) and Andrew Herrmann (Louisiana) earned weekly honors from the College Baseball Foundation (CBF) for their respective performances last week, it was announced on Tuesday.
Schaffner earned the Brooks Wallace Award Player of the Week while Canon was named the Buster Posey Award National Collegiate Catcher of the Week. Overbeek earned the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Week. Herrmann was selected as the National Pitcher of the Week.
Brooks Wallace Award Player of the Week (Nation’s Most Outstanding Shortstop)
Jake Schaffner, SS, Junior, North Carolina, Janesville, Wisconsin
Schaffner was hot at the plate last week helping lead the Tar Heels to a perfect 5-0 record, including wins over North Carolina A&T, VCU and a series sweep of Le Moyne. The junior shortstop was 11-for-17 (.647) on the week with 10 runs scored, seven RBIs, four doubles, one triple and one home run. He also earned three bases on balls and did not commit an error in the field. Schaffner is now hitting .467 with two home runs, 12 RBIs and six stolen bases on the season.
Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Week
Cider Canon C, Junior, Duke, San Marino, California
Canon posted a blistering .643 (9-for-14) for the week helping the Blue Devils to four wins in five games last week, including a single win over UNC Wilmington and a weekend series win over Princeton. The junior drove in 10 RBIs, scored seven runs and swatted four home runs, while also walking five times and stealing three bases. Two of his four home runs came in a 6-2 Duke win over Princeton on Friday. Defensively, Canon earned three assists, did not commit an error and cut down a pair of opponent base stealers. Canon leads the team with a .452 bating average, six home runs and 21 RBIs this season.
John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Week Award
Josiah Overbeek, 1B/RHP, Freshman, Army, Weatherford, Texas
Overbeek played a key role in Army's three-game sweep over Queens (NC) both at the plate and on the mound. He was 4-for-10 (.400) with home runs on both Friday and Saturday. He also notched a double in the series, a pair of walks and three RBIs. On the mound, he appeared out of the bullpen on Friday and Sunday. He earned the win in Friday's season opener with a strikeout and 2.2 innings. In Sunday's game, he recorded a two-out save to secure the sweep. His 3.1 innings pitched over the series featured an .091 opponent batting average and no runs allowed.
National Pitcher of the Week
Andrew Herrmann, LHP, Graduate, Louisiana, Kennesaw, Georgia
Herrmann was masterful in tossing a complete game one-hit shutout and striking out 13 batters in leading his team to an 8-0 win over UC San Diego on Saturday. The southpaw recorded the program's first complete-game one-hit, shutout since former Ragin’ Cajuns’ hurler Evan Guillory faced Northwestern State on April 5, 2016. Herrmann faced four batters over the minimum, logging 117 pitches while never allowing a runner past second base. Hermann is now 2-0 on the season with a 1.33 ERA and 26 strikeouts.

Brooks Wallace Award
The Brooks Wallace Award is presented annually to honor the nation's most outstanding shortstop. It is a tribute to Brooks Wallace, a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977-80 who passed away at age 27 after a courageous battle with leukemia. Prior to 2009, the award recognized the national player of the year.
Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award
Established in 2000, by the Wichita Sports Commission, the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award is presented annually to honor the nation's most outstanding catcher. Posey began his collegiate career as a shortstop, before moving to catcher where he won the 2008 Johnny Bench Award, Dick Howser Trophy and the Golden Spikes Award. In his MLB career with the San Francisco Giants, Posey earned three world series titles, seven All-Star Game selections, five Silver Slugger Awards, the 2010 National League Rookie of the Year, 2012 National League MVP and was a 2016 Gold Glove Award winner.
John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award
The John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award is presented annually by the College Baseball Foundation to honor the nation's top combo pitcher-position player. Olerud, who was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007, was a standout pitcher and first baseman at Washington State University from 1987 through 1989.
